How do I scale social commerce with creators if I only want to pay for results?

You pay creators per click or per sale instead of a fixed fee, for example through your own affiliate programme, a creator platform or TikTok Shop affiliate. That lowers your risk but brings no posts on its own: many partners in a programme never become active. Scaling means giving creators a reason to post, activating many at once and seeing who sells. Work out the most a sale may cost, test small and back the creators who stay below it.

Six routes compared: what you pay for and what gets creators posting

RouteWhat you pay forWhat gets creators postingWhat makes it hard
Your own affiliate programme through an affiliate networkcommission per sale, per click too if you like, at your ratespartners apply or are invited; they post when it pays off for themmany partners stay inactive; outreach, approvals and upkeep take time
Creator platform with creator storefrontsper click, per sale or both, through your affiliate programme or directlycreators can pick your products; it’s their call if they doselectable doesn’t mean featured; per-creator figures only if the platform reports them, sometimes for a fee
Long-term programme with selected creatorscommission, plus bonuses or personal discount codes as agreedyou approach creators one by one and agree postsgrows slowly; contract, support and billing per creator
TikTok Shop affiliatecommission on sales in TikTok Shop, agreed with the creatorsaccording to TikTok, only creators aged 18+ with at least 500 followers in the EU country concerned; promoting you is their callyou sell on the marketplace yourself, as the seller; the purchase happens in TikTok Shop, not in your online shop
Campaign with many creators and a shared budgeta fixed budget, split according to agreed KPIsbudget and timeframe give creators a reason to post at the same timethe budget is fixed in advance; briefing, disclosure and reporting per creator
Creator videos run as ads (paid social)ad budget; according to Meta, charged per click, share of video watched or impression, depending on the objectivecreators supply a video, you buy the reach through adsyou pay even without a sale; agree usage rights in the contract first

What creators earn depends on results in the first four rows. Even there, with pay per click you carry the risk that no sale follows, and fees, samples and your own time come on top (more on that below). In the campaign, the total is fixed in advance; results only decide how it is split between creators. With ads, you pay for impressions or clicks on the ad, sale or no sale.

According to TikTok (EU policy of 3 September 2026, read on 20 October 2026), creators need at least 500 followers in the EU country they apply for and must be at least 18. Creators agree the commission with the seller or an authorised representative, and under the creator terms TikTok is not a party to that agreement. The charging methods for ads come from Meta’s Business Help Centre, also read on 20 October 2026.

Being in a programme doesn’t mean anyone posts

When you scale on results, the problem is often not the commission rate but that too few creators post. A running programme, a network listing or products that creators could pick on a platform don’t create a single post. Many partners in a programme never become active, and creators with exactly the audience you want rarely post without a reason.

That comes down to the model. With pure commission, creators carry the risk: they make the video and only earn if your product page sells. The more risk you push onto creators, the fewer of them take part. Scaling on results therefore comes down to three things:

  • Activate: creators need a reason, such as a product sample, a fixed timeframe, a personal request or a budget that is split by results.
  • Many at once: a single post tells you little. Only when, say, ten or twenty creators post in the same period can you see what is down to your product and what is down to the creator.
  • See who sells: without figures per creator, you don’t know who should get more products or better terms. If a platform runs as a single partner in your programme, you lack those figures without its reporting.

What scaling still costs you up front

You only owe commission once a click or sale happens. But every new creator also adds costs that don’t depend on results: product samples, network or platform fees depending on the provider, and your time for briefings, checking disclosure and reporting. Count them per creator, not per campaign, and deduct them when you decide what a sale may cost.

If you also pay creators a fee for photos or videos they make to promote you, the Künstlersozialkasse (artists’ social insurance fund, KSK) says it counts towards the base for the Künstlersozialabgabe (artists’ social security levy). According to the KSK, commission from an affiliate partnership does not. How a campaign budget split by KPIs is treated is something to clear with your tax adviser before you start.

If you have many regular customers, you may be paying for purchases that would have come anyway, for example when regulars order with a creator’s code. The share of new customers per creator is a first indication of what is genuinely additional.

From test to scale in six steps

  1. Work out what a sale may cost at most. Say a product costs €83.30 including 19% VAT (§ 12(1) UStG, the German VAT Act), so €70 net. After goods, shipping, payment and return costs, you’re left with €28 on every sale that isn’t returned. If you want to keep €7 of that, a sale through creators may cost at most €21, which is 30% of the net value.
  2. Pick products that show well on video, stay in stock for the whole campaign and have a margin that carries this rate. Decide where the links lead: to your shop, to other shops or to both.
  3. Give creators a reason and start small, for example with ten creators, product samples and a fixed four-week timeframe. Everyone gets the same terms and the same briefing so you can compare the results.
  4. Evaluate per creator: clicks, sales, revenue after returns and cost per sale. Wait until the withdrawal period is over and allow for the return shipment. In Germany the period is 14 days and for goods usually starts once the buyer has received them (§ 355(2) and § 356(2) BGB, the German Civil Code). Anyone who withdraws on the last day then has up to 14 days to send the goods back (§ 355(3) and § 357(1) BGB). If you offer a longer returns period, use that.
  5. Shift and expand: creators who sell below your maximum get more products, bonuses or higher rates, as long as the cost per sale stays below it. Bring in creators with a similar audience on the same starting terms. Swap out products that don’t sell.
  6. Keep the programme running permanently and plan seasonal peaks such as Black Friday or Christmas as separate campaigns with a fixed budget on top.

Where scaling often fails

  • Product data: without a GTIN (the number under the barcode), variants or good images, creators and price comparison sites struggle to find your product or match the wrong variant.
  • Stock: if a video takes off and the size is sold out, pay per click means you pay for visits without sales.
  • Link target: if the link goes to your homepage rather than to the product in the variant shown, sales get lost.
  • Sales paid twice: if an ad, a discount code and an affiliate link all claim the same purchase, you pay for it more than once. Decide in advance which channel counts when they overlap.
  • Ad disclosure: anyone who receives something in return for a post generally has to make the commercial purpose clear (§ 5a(4) UWG, the German Unfair Competition Act). If an agent of your company commits the breach, claims for removal and injunctions can also be brought against the owner of the business under § 8(2) UWG. Each case is assessed individually to decide if a creator counts as an agent.

How it works on wyrld

With wyrld Boost you put your budget behind creators who feature your products in their own videos and add them to their storefronts. That gives creators the reason to post that pure commission lacks, and many take part at once. Payouts follow KPIs you set before the start, such as sales, clicks, watch time or reach, and you decide in which shops people buy. Creators label campaign videos as advertising. As with any campaign, the budget is fixed in advance; results decide how it is split.

To shift budget in step 5, you need figures per creator, and your affiliate programme doesn’t give you them: there, wyrld appears as a single partner, including for creators who can usually already pick your products through a programme with one of the large affiliate networks. The brand and shop subscription breaks that partner down by creator every day: who features your products, who brings clicks and, where the shop reports sales, who sells. For creators who sell below your maximum, wyrld can set up individual terms. Unlike commission, the subscription doesn’t depend on results; it runs monthly. wyrld quotes prices for the subscription and Boost on request.

The creators on wyrld are mainly in fashion, beauty and interiors, and their audience is largely young. How many of them join your campaign is up to them, and what they sell only shows in the figures afterwards. So wyrld makes no promise on participant numbers, reach or sales.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Why don’t creators in my affiliate programme promote my products?

Often there is no reason to. Creators who don’t know your product and can’t tell if it sells tend to show something they have already earned with. A place in your programme doesn’t change that. Product samples, a personal request, a fixed campaign period with a budget or a higher rate for creators who have already sold can help.

Does a higher commission bring more sales?

Not automatically. A higher rate can make your programme more attractive to creators, but it also makes the sales that would have come anyway more expensive. Raise rates selectively for creators who reliably sell below your maximum cost per sale, or for a limited promotion, and check after returns that the numbers still work.

When is it worth scaling a creator campaign?

When several creators stay below the most a sale may cost you across the whole test round, even after the returns period has passed. Then give them more products or better terms and bring in creators with a similar audience. If only one creator sells well, that is more likely a lucky hit than a pattern.

Which creators can promote my products in TikTok Shop in Germany?

According to TikTok’s policy of 3 September 2026, only creators aged 18 or over with at least 500 followers in Germany who also access their German-registered account from Germany. New creators with no official or promotional link to a seller may first spend 30 days in a pilot programme, with a maximum of 21 shopping videos a week. Promoting your product is still their call.

Do I pay commission if the goods are returned?

That is up to your terms. If you only pay on purchases that are kept, release the commission once the withdrawal period or your longer returns window has passed and any announced returns have arrived. According to TikTok Shop’s creator terms, a refund can affect the amount of commission. For other routes, the terms of the programme concerned set out how returns are handled.
